Buying bronze strings for a steel-string acoustic guitar means choosing between two main types: phosphor bronze and 80/20 bronze. They sound noticeably different, last different amounts of time and suit different playing styles.
This guide explains what separates the materials, what a coating adds, how gauge shapes tone and feel, and when it is time for a fresh set.

80/20 bronze is made of roughly 80 percent copper and 20 percent zinc. Freshly strung, this type sounds bright, crisp and lively, with firm bass and crystalline high-end shimmer. That snappy fresh sound is exactly why 80/20 is a classic for strumming and recording.
Phosphor bronze is essentially the same alloy with a small amount of phosphor added. The result is a warmer, fuller tone with more pronounced midrange and a slightly softer attack. The phosphor also improves corrosion resistance, which is why these strings hold their tone longer.

02Coated or uncoated: what longevity adds
Sweat, oil and humidity gradually oxidise uncoated bronze strings, leaving them sounding duller and feeling rougher. Coated strings add a thin protective layer over the winding. Elixir Nanoweb and Polyweb are the best-known versions, with Nanoweb feeling closer to an uncoated string and Polyweb being smoother.
Coated strings often keep their fresh tone three to four times longer than uncoated sets. They cost more per set, but over their lifespan they are usually the cheaper choice for frequent players and for hands with aggressive sweat.

03Gauge: tone, feel and neck tension
Gauge refers to the diameter of the thinnest string. Light at gauge 012 is the common all-rounder: comfortable to play, balanced, the safe standard for most steel-string acoustics. Custom Light sits just below it and plays a touch easier. Medium at gauge 013 delivers more volume, bass foundation and sustain, but asks for more strength in the fretting hand.
Thicker strings put more pull on the neck. On older or lightly built instruments it is worth checking the maker recommendation before moving from light to medium gauge. When in doubt, gauge 012 stays the uncomplicated choice.
| Gauge | Name | Character | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 011 | Custom Light | light, soft, low neck pull | beginners, light fingerstyle |
| 012 | Light | balanced, all-rounder | most steel-string acoustics |
| 013 | Medium | loud, strong bass and sustain | heavy strumming, bluegrass |
04Which type when, and when to change
Rule of thumb: if you want bright, percussive sparkle for strumming, reach for 80/20 bronze. If you prefer warmth, rounded mids and a longer life, for example for fingerstyle and vocal accompaniment, phosphor bronze serves you better. Neither type is objectively better, they simply emphasise different frequencies.
Change interval: with regular play, uncoated strings lose their sparkle after about three to four weeks. Coated sets often last several months. At the latest when the tone goes dull, the tuning no longer holds or the winding starts to corrode, it is time for a new set. The choice is not a matter of belief but of the tone you want: 80/20 for bright shimmer, phosphor bronze for warmth and longevity, coating for lasting freshness. With gauge 012 as a starting point you can hardly go wrong.
