The Yamaha CX series is the most widely played grand piano line in the upper premium segment, with six models from the compact C1X to the large C7X. If you are looking at a Yamaha CX grand piano C1X, C3X or a larger model, two questions matter: which length fits the room, and what the Silent and TransAcoustic options bring.
This article walks through the whole series, from length to finish, and says for each room size which CX is the right choice. For a broader placement against the entry-level lines, see our comparison of the Yamaha GB, GC and CX series.
01The CX series at a glance
The CX series sits between the compact entry-level GB and GC grands and the premium SX and CF models. All CX models share the same design philosophy: a scale design derived from concert grand development, a solid spruce soundboard and an action with an even touch across the full range.
The key difference within the series is length. The longer the grand, the longer the bass strings and the larger the soundboard. The result is a deeper, fuller bass and a longer sustain. A C1X does not sound worse than a C7X, it sounds more compact and direct. The choice is therefore primarily a question of room, not of quality.

02C1X to C7X: which size for which room
The six CX models cover a length range from 161 to 227 centimetres. As a rough rule: the larger the room and the more sound you want, the longer the grand can be. In a small, very reverberant room a large grand can overwhelm the sound, while in a big hall a compact grand quickly feels too quiet.
The table below maps each model to a typical room situation. These are practical guideline values; they do not replace hearing the instrument in your own room, but they give a reliable first orientation.
| Model | Length | Typical room |
|---|---|---|
| C1X | 161 cm | Living room, small music room |
| C2X | 173 cm | Larger living room, teaching room |
| C3X | 186 cm | Salon, music school, demanding home |
| C5X | 200 cm | Large salon, small concert room, church |
| C6X | 212 cm | Concert room, auditorium, studio |
| C7X | 227 cm | Concert hall, large stage |
03Sound and construction: what length does
With each step up the series, bass volume and sustain grow. The C3X is regarded as the balanced all-rounder of the line, long enough for a carrying bass yet compact enough for normal living spaces. The C5X marks the transition into the near-concert segment and uses an Austrian spruce soundboard for a warmer tone colour.
All models share the precise Yamaha action with even repetition behaviour, a high-gloss polished case in the standard black finish and carefully tuned voicing from the factory. For a direct comparison with the entry-level grands, see the GB-GC-CX comparison mentioned above.
04Silent SH3 and TransAcoustic TA3: practise quietly, sound fully
Two systems make the acoustic CX grand usable at times when you do not want to disturb anyone. Both build on the same foundation: the grand remains a full acoustic instrument with strings and soundboard at all times.
With the Silent SH3 system, a stop rail halts the hammers just before the strings, so no acoustic tone is produced. Optical sensors read the touch precisely and generate a high-quality digital sound played back through headphones. During the day you play the grand normally as an acoustic instrument; in the evening you play silently through headphones.
The TransAcoustic TA3 system goes one step further and needs no external speakers. A transducer drives the grand's own soundboard, so the digital sound comes from the body of the instrument itself, at adjustable volume and with the natural voice of the grand. The strings remain in place, both acoustically and via the transducer. In the CX series, SH3 is the widely available Silent option, while TransAcoustic TA3 is offered on the C3X.

05Finish and equipment
The CX series comes as standard in high-gloss black with brass fittings. On request, a chrome finish is available, with hinges, pedals and hardware in chrome rather than brass. This clearly changes the visual character, from classic and warm towards modern and cool, suiting a contemporary interior.
Which finish, which length and which sound system make sense in a given case depends on the room, playing habits and interior style. Our grand piano selection shows the currently available CX models with their equipment variants.
The Yamaha CX series offers a fitting model for almost any room, from the compact C1X to the C7X concert grand. If you want to practise quietly without giving up a true acoustic grand, Silent SH3 or TransAcoustic TA3 round out the instrument. The next step is to check the relevant length in your room and decide between brass and chrome fittings.
