The Yamaha AvantGrand N1X promises something that long seemed impossible: the action of a real grand piano in an instrument that fits into a corner of the living room and can be played at night through headphones. This is made possible by a hybrid approach that pairs a genuine grand piano action with digital sound generation.
In this spotlight we look at where the grand piano feel really comes from, how Yamaha produces the sound, who the N1X is for and how it differs from the upright model in the series.
01A real grand piano action, not a keyboard imitation
At the heart of the AvantGrand N1X is a genuine grand piano action. The keys move horizontal wooden hammers, exactly as in an acoustic grand piano, rather than relying on the vertical mechanism of an upright. This is the decisive difference from conventional digital pianos, which only imitate the touch with weights and springs.
Because a real grand action is built in, repetition, dynamics and the let-off at the pressure point feel the way they do on a concert grand. Instead of mechanical contacts, non-contact optical sensors read how fast and how deep each key is played, and an additional sensor captures the motion of every hammer.
02String-free, yet with the sound of two concert grands
Unlike a silent piano, the N1X has no strings and no soundboard. The tone is generated entirely digitally. The sound comes from recordings of two outstanding instruments: the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial. These two concert grands have very different characters, from the bright, projecting CFX to the warm, round Bösendorfer.
So that the sound seems to come from the instrument rather than from a box, Yamaha uses a multi-channel spatial speaker system that distributes the sound across the body. Through headphones, a binaural sound image adds an open, spatial impression even during silent practice. 03Who the N1X is for
The AvantGrand N1X is aimed at players who want the action of a grand piano but not the space, the tuning maintenance and the fixed volume of an acoustic instrument. Because there are no strings, the N1X stays tuning-stable and never needs tuning. The volume can be adjusted or muted entirely through headphones, which makes it suitable for apartment buildings and late practice sessions.
With a grand-like but far more compact body, it fits where a real grand piano never could. It is less an entry-level digital piano than the digital answer to the wish for a grand piano feel in an ordinary living space.

04N1X or the upright model in the series
Within the AvantGrand series there is the N1X with a grand piano action and the Yamaha NU1XA AvantGrand Hybrid Piano – inkl. Lieferung & Aufbau with an upright action. The difference lies in the type of action: the N1X works with a horizontal grand action, the upright model with a vertical upright action.
This affects the touch, the shape and the footprint. The upright model is more compact and sits closer to the wall, while the N1X offers the more pronounced grand piano feel at a slightly greater depth. Both are string-free hybrids and therefore clearly distinct from a silent piano, which has real strings and is only muted by a stop rail. A full look at the upright hybrid is published separately.
| Feature | N1X | Upright hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Horizontal grand action | Vertical upright action |
| Shape | Grand-like, compact | Slim upright format against the wall |
| Strings | None, fully digital | None, fully digital |
| Touch | Pronounced grand piano feel | Typical upright touch |
The AvantGrand N1X is the digital answer to a long-standing wish: a real grand piano feel that stays tuning-stable, can be turned down and fits into a living space. Anyone looking for the grand piano action without maintaining an acoustic instrument will find a category of its own here.
