Silent Grand Piano: Practising Quietly on a Grand

Yamaha C1X Flügel - Musik-Ebert Gmbh

Anyone who owns a grand piano knows the dilemma: the instrument sounds wonderful, but late at night or in an apartment building, every note is one too many. This is exactly what the silent grand piano addresses. If you want to practise quietly on a grand without giving up the real action, an integrated silent system is the answer.

This guide explains how the silent system works on a large instrument, how it differs from a stringless hybrid grand, and which models we carry.

01What a silent grand piano is

A silent grand piano is first of all a perfectly normal acoustic grand with strings, a soundboard and a full grand action. A silent system is added on top. In silent mode, a stop rail brings the hammers just in front of the strings and holds them there. The strings are no longer struck, so no acoustic sound is produced.

At the same time, contactless optical sensors read how you strike each key and pass the playing data to a digital tone generator. You hear that sound through headphones. The action stays unchanged, the touch feels the same as always. Switch the system off and it is a fully acoustic grand again.

02Silent is not hybrid

This distinction matters because the two terms are often confused. A silent grand has real strings and a soundboard; the silent system is just an extra quiet mode. By day you play it as a normal acoustic instrument.

A hybrid grand, by contrast, has a genuine grand action with wooden hammers but no strings and no soundboard at all. Its sound is always digital. So anyone who wants to keep the acoustic grand tone and only practise quietly in the evening needs a silent grand, not a pure hybrid. For more on the stringless principle, see our article on hybrid pianos.

03Yamaha CX and GC with SH3

On Yamaha grands the silent system is called SH3. In silent mode the hammers are stopped just before the strings, optical sensors capture touch and pedal without contact, so the feel of the acoustic action is preserved. The digital sound comes from a sampled concert grand.

The CX series is Yamaha s concert grand line for the stage and demanding home playing. The Yamaha C1X Flügel - schwarz poliert mit SH3 Silent System is the compact entry point, the Yamaha C3X Flügel - schwarz poliert mit SH3 the versatile mid-size choice for larger rooms. More compact and more accessible in price is the Yamaha GC 2 Flügel - schwarz poliert mit SH3 Silent System from the GC line.

04Kawai GL with ATX4

Kawai calls its silent system ATX4 (AnyTime). Here too a stop mechanism keeps the hammers from reaching the strings, and high-resolution optical sensors read the hammer movement without contact. The digital sound comes from Kawai s tone generation.

The Kawai Flügel GL-10 schwarz poliert mit ATX4 Silent System is Kawai s compact salon grand with ATX4 and a relatively accessible way into the world of silent grands. Anyone after a present acoustic instrument with the option to practise quietly will find a balanced choice here.

05Who a silent grand piano suits

A silent grand suits you if you do not want to miss the acoustic tone of a real grand but need to be considerate: of the neighbours, of the family, of your own need for rest. You practise with headphones at any time of day and play the full acoustic sound when it suits.

For pure stage musicians with no quiet requirement, or for anyone who deliberately prefers not to maintain strings, a hybrid instrument or a digital piano is often the more obvious choice. If you are still unsure about size, our article on grand piano sizes helps: room size, sound volume and placement matter for a silent grand just as much as for a purely acoustic one.

A silent grand piano resolves the conflict between full acoustic tone and consideration for those around you, without forcing a choice between the two. Yamaha with SH3 and Kawai with ATX4 cover the range from compact salon grand to concert grand.

Frequently asked questions

Does a silent grand sound like a real grand in normal mode?
Yes. A silent grand is a full acoustic grand with strings and a soundboard. The silent system is only an additional mode; in normal use you play it acoustically and unchanged.
Does the silent system change the feel?
No. The action is fully preserved. The sensors work optically and without contact, they do not interfere with the keyboard. In silent mode the touch feels the same as acoustic playing.
What is the difference between a silent grand and a hybrid grand?
A silent grand has real strings and sounds acoustic in normal mode. A hybrid grand has a real action but no strings; its sound is always digital. Anyone who wants to keep the acoustic tone chooses silent.
Can a silent system be retrofitted?
On many instruments it is technically possible, but for a coherent touch and clean sound the factory-integrated solution is usually the more reliable one. The grands we list are factory-equipped.
