Bechstein, Steinway & Grotrian used: premium pianos as fine occasions

Generalueberholtes Steinway & Sons Klavier V-125 in Wurzelnussbaum als Premium-Occasion

Looking for a used Bechstein piano means wanting more than a practice instrument: premium brands like C. Bechstein, Steinway & Sons, Grotrian-Steinweg and Schimmel carry the sound of an entire manufactory tradition. Bought used, they become attainable without paying the new price.

A well-kept premium piano ages differently from a mass-produced one. It holds its value, often still sounds characterful after decades, and can be reconditioned by specialists. This article explains why a premium used piano is a class of its own and what to look for when you buy.

01Why buy a premium piano used

A new manufactory piano costs many times more than a mid-range instrument. On the used market the ratio shifts: you get the resonating body, the hammer action and the tonal character of a premium brand for a fraction of the new price.

There is also value retention. Brands like Grotrian-Steinweg are known for stable tuning and durable construction; such an instrument loses very little substance over the years. Buying a well-kept GROTRIAN STEINWEG 122 College Occasion Bj. 1991, sehr guter Zustand (gebraucht) or a BECHSTEIN - Zimmermann Klavier Mod. Z.1 schwarz poliert Original Made in Germany mit Renner Mechanik Bj. 2000 - Bestzustand (gebraucht) today means buying an instrument that will still hold its value in ten years.

02The premium brands available used

Not every used brand is equal. In the premium segment we carry used instruments from these manufactories:

Steinway & Sons is the reference for concert tonal colour. A fully reconditioned model like the STEINWAY & SONS Klavier Mod. V-125 Wurzelnussbaum Occasion Bj. 1936 Generalüberholt (gebraucht) combines historic substance with professional restoration.

C. Bechstein stands for the German, singing piano tone; in the Bechstein-Zimmermann line you get that origin – made in Germany with Renner action – as an affordable used instrument.

Grotrian-Steinweg from Braunschweig is valued by pianists for its precise action and stable tuning.

Schimmel rounds out the field as Germany's largest piano maker, with a clear, carrying tone.

03What to check on a used premium piano

Four components determine the substance and lifespan of a used piano, regardless of brand:

The soundboard is the soul of the instrument. It should be free of cracks, since cracks from poor storage or climate can permanently affect the tone.

The pinblock holds around two hundred tuning pins under several tonnes of string tension. If it loses its grip, the piano will not stay in tune.

The action, by contrast, can usually be reconditioned well. Keys that rattle or respond unevenly are a sign, not a deal-breaker – a high-quality Renner action, found on many of our premium occasions, is a plus here.

Age alone says little: a well-kept manufactory piano can sound for over a hundred years. What matters is origin, history and care. We describe the full inspection path in our Klaviere - Gebraucht selection.

04What a reputable dealer offers

A premium used piano is a long-term purchase – the inspection belongs in expert hands, not a private listing. At a specialist dealer, every instrument is checked and reconditioned where needed: soundboard and pinblock are assessed, the action regulated, the tone verified.

That way you know before you buy what you are getting – year, origin and condition are transparent. Our Klaviere - Gebraucht selection contains only inspected instruments, from the affordable brand piano to the fully reconditioned manufactory icon.

A used premium piano combines tonal culture with value retention – when substance, origin and care are right. By checking the soundboard, pinblock and a documented history, you find in the occasion of a great manufactory an instrument for life.

Frequently asked questions

Is a used Bechstein worth more than a new mid-range piano?
Often yes. You get the tonal character and substance of a manufactory that a new mid-range instrument cannot match – at a comparable or lower price. The condition has to be checked and well preserved.
How old can a used premium piano be?
Age alone is not a criterion. A well-kept manufactory piano can sound for over a hundred years, while a neglected instrument suffers after just a few years. What matters is the soundboard, pinblock and care history.
Does a premium piano lose much value as a used instrument?
Premium brands like Steinway, Bechstein and Grotrian-Steinweg are known for value retention. A well-kept instrument holds its value far better over the years than a series-built piano.
What does 'fully reconditioned' mean for a used piano?
Fully reconditioned means the load-bearing components have been professionally inspected and restored – such as the action, dampers and tuning. A historic instrument thus regains a reliable, play-ready state.
