The piano bench has a real say in how comfortably and how long you can sit at your instrument. The wrong height or a worn-out cushion makes itself felt within minutes in your shoulders and wrists.
This guide covers what really matters when buying a piano bench: adjustable versus fixed bench versus stool, the right seat height, padding and upholstery, one or two seats, and storage for sheet music.
Seat height set steplessly

Ideal for: One player, fixed seat height, traditional look

The most important decision first: adjustable or fixed. An adjustable bench sets the seat height to the player, steplessly. That is a clear advantage as soon as several people play or a child is growing.
There are two adjustment mechanisms. The spindle type is set via knobs on the sides and holds the chosen height reliably. The hydraulic lift bench adjusts by lever in seconds, without cranking, and is especially convenient day to day.
A fixed bench is stable, often cheaper and usually classic in design. It fits when only one person plays and the right seat height stays the same anyway.

02Finding the right seat height
Seat height is the most common mistake when buying a bench. The rule of thumb: sitting upright, the upper arms hang loosely beside the body and the forearms run horizontally to the keys. The wrist stays in a neutral position and does not bend up or down.
The feet rest flat and stable on the floor. Sit too high and the shoulders pull up; sit too low and the wrist bends. That is exactly why an adjustable bench is so sensible for children: it grows with them over the years and can be set precisely for any player.
03Padding, upholstery and comfort
With padding, density matters, not thickness alone. Good cold-foam or multi-layer padding gives way under weight without bottoming out and keeps its shape for years.
For the cover you can choose faux leather, real leather or fabric. Faux leather is easy to wipe clean, real leather looks premium and ages well, fabric is breathable and warm. For home use faux leather is the pragmatic choice, real leather the long-lasting one.

04One or two seats, with or without storage
A single-seat bench is enough for solo playing and needs little space. A two-seat bench pays off for four-hand playing, for lessons and wherever a teacher or parent sits alongside.
Many fixed benches offer a music compartment under the seat. It keeps sheet music within reach and brings real storage to a small space.

| Type | Ideal for | Height | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable bench | several players, children | adjustable | rarely |
| Fixed bench with storage | one player, tidiness | fixed | yes |
| Two-seat bench | lessons, four hands | fixed or adjustable | sometimes |
| Round stool | compact, swivel | usually adjustable | no |
05Piano bench or piano stool?
A round swivel stool is compact, looks elegant and often adjusts quickly via a gas spring. It offers no back surface and less side support than a wide bench, however.
For longer practice and for children a wide bench is usually the steadier choice, because it offers more seating surface and stability. The stool wins when space is tight or a slim, classic look is wanted.

In short: if several people play or a child is growing, go for an adjustable bench. If only one person plays at the instrument, a stable bench with storage is a calm, long-lasting choice. In both cases, check the right seat height first and a cushion that keeps its shape.
